En sus primeros años como médico, el congoleño Denis Mukwege descubrió que muchas mujeres embarazadas de su país no recibían atención prenatal, lo que hacía que un número elevado de gestaciones acabaran en tragedia. Su vocación de ginecólogo nació en ese momento y le llevó a estudiar obstetricia en Francia. De regreso al Congo, se volcó en prestar atención a aquellas que estaban más desprotegidas. Diez años más tarde, en pleno conflicto armado, fundó el hospital de Panzi, en Bukavu, una región en la que las milicias han convertido las violaciones y las mutilaciones genitales en arma de guerra, y empezó a tratar a las numerosas víctimas de la violencia sexual. Las amenazas contra él no tardaron en llegar.
